I recently received a copy of the WP Lockdown report (not to be confused with the free WP Lockdown Plugin), which touts being a one stop solution to securing your WordPress Blog.  It sells for $17 or more.

Frankly, most of the ebook is full of security tips for your hosting accounts and general database security tips which these days, if you go with a good hosting company, is already done for you.

The WordPress specific measures for security that are presented in the ebook are nothing new in my opinion.  With recommendations to use Askimet and Catpcha, and plugins to achieve a secure admin etc, there’s not much there that someone who’s been using WordPress even for a short amount of time is not already familiar with.

Additionally, it’s fairly “affiliate link” heavy and even recommends some pretty poor choices for things like PC Anti virus programs etc.  I would have to question security recommendations from someone that put’s programs like Norton or McAfee at the top of their anti virus lists.  Maybe from an affiliate standpoint, they were just trying to cover all the bases, but if they actually highly recommend those for Anti virus protection, their other choices for “security” methods is suspect.

The bottom line?  If you search google for terms like “WordPress Security Issues” or “Protecting WordPress Blog Content”  or even “WP Lockdown”,  within minutes you’ll find free plugins, tutorials and other sources such as blogs and forums which give you all of this information and more for FREE.  So, if it’s worth $17, $27 or more so that you don’t have to spend 5 or 10 minutes searching Google, then I guess it’s a good value, but personally, if I pay upwards of $20 for an ebook, I am generally disappointed if it’s full of info readily available else where for free…

Plugins for WordPress have become very popular with many marketers.  Unfortunately, most are very simple single task plugins, can be “buggy” (rushed to market with little testing) and in some cases (and this really ticks me off) are copies of or renditions of FREE plugins from the WordPress.org Plugin directory!  (In fact, yet another came out today).  They count on the fact that many will buy on “impulse” without doing a little “checking” first.
